Definitely wouldn’t have got away with playing this one in the hotel room on Saturday morning.

When at university one of my mates constantly got shot down for mentioning Tangerine Dream – most definitely not cool in my circle of friends.  He didn’t have his record collection with him anyway,  so he was subjected to my music in our flat,  whether he liked it or not.  He generally took in much better humour than I would have done had the roles been reversed, though.

Today’s album was chosen with him in mind.  First time I’ve listened to Tangerine Dream.  Rockin’…

On the train on the way to London, listening on my new birthday-present headphones – their first trip out.

This album reminds me of my first working summer – the entire summer holidays working in a folk museum in the Scottish highlands.  Entire days spent watching over old threshing machines and butter churns with not even a Sony Walkman to keep me company.

Anyone who knows me would be amazed to discover that I didn’t own this album (on CD at least).  Didn’t own it until today, that is, when I got it for my birthday.

I have had it on vinyl since its release, or soon after, when I won it in a raffle in my sixth-form common room.  You got to choose which album was bought for you and this was top of my list.  Their last classic album, I’d say.

The Ruts again, couldn’t wait too long after listening to The Crack to give their second offering a play. I played this album to death when it came out in 1980, although as a coherent album it’s a bit of shambles. I’ve had to slightly bend my own rule on “no-compilations” to allow this one in, as it’s kind-of a compilation. But I’m going to use the excuse that the tracks are not previously released on albums (i.e. the one previous Ruts album). I’d only have been cheating myself if I couldn’t include this.
