It’s new album day today, this having just arrived in the post as part of the October CD delivery. Still a strong connection to the late seventies, of course.
Instantly recognisable from the first couple of bars as a product of old “chicken legs”, Mr Cornwell, this is one of the best of his recent offerings, even on the first listen. I do feel that some of the drumming could be a little more “finessed”, perhaps, rather than sounding like someone’s trying to break down your front door. Chris Bell certainly shows the skins no mercy, but he doesn’t have the delicate touch of a Jet Black, that’s for sure.
You could probably tell this is Hugh by looking at some of the song titles, as well. “Bad Vibrations” and “Love Me Slender”, for example. Previous albums have of course given us titles such as “Hot Cat on a Tin Roof” and “Do Right Bayou”. I can just about forgive Hugh anything, though, the miserable old get.
